Australian Sport Industry
June 5 - 23, 2023
Professional Development Program
This program is a Sport Management professional development opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students interested in the global sport industry. This program is not affiliated with any university, however, if students desire credit, then we encourage them to pursue independent study options as their home institution as it is sometimes possible to arrange. This also can open up the opportunity for financial aide and/or loans if needed.
Academic Director: We are thrilled to announce Dr. Richard M. Southall as the Academic Director for this program. Richard is a professor in the Department of Sport & Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina. Since 2008 he has also been the Director of the College Research Sport Institute (CSRI), which sponsors an annual national conference on U.S. college sport and publishes in the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics. Richard will be with the group everyday and will be responsible for facilitating the learning progress. Click here to read more about Dr. Southall.
Recent Participants: During summer 2022, we had 50+ students from the below schools take one of our professional development classes to Australia or Ireland: NC State University, Ohio State University, Penn State University, San Diego State University, Springfield College, University of Alabama, University of Arkansas, UNC Chapel Hill, University of Delaware, University of Georgia, University of Pittsburg, University of South Carolina, University of Tampa, University of Tennessee, and University of Texas.
Why choose this program?: By participating in the program students will develop a thorough understanding of the Australian Model of Sport. They will learn how federal, state, and local governments in association with National Sporting Bodies and local professional clubs play a leading role in delivering sport and sport related policies and programs to the community. This includes providing support and funding to sporting organizations and clubs as well as being major investors and contributors to building and maintaining sports related infrastructure and sponsoring the hosting of major sporting events, including the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane. Australian sporting organizations and sports clubs play a pivotal role in the delivery of sport to the community.
Upon completion of the program, students will understand the government's role in sport and how the club system works. They will be able to compare and contrast how sport is delivered to the community in the USA vs. Australia. They will be able to appreciate the importance of sport to Australia society from a social, political, health, and cultural context. Students will also learn about the indigenous people of Australia and how in recent years sport is being used as a vehicle to help facilitate social change within the community.
