Program Details: This is a Sports Medicine Professional Development opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students interested in a career in Sports Medicine. Students that typically go on our programs are interested in Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Medicine, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, Public Health, and/or Exercise Science. It is a perfect program for students looking to learn more about these professions as well as to enhance their resume and admissions chances to these graduate level programs. Highlights include: 

  • Students will interact and learn with Sports Medicine practitioners and Aussie students from 3 difference Universities. 
  • Students will have valuable interactions with Sports Medicine experts from Australia & the USA to help them prepare for and finalize their own professional goals.
  • Students will examine all aspects of sports culture through close analysis of primary sources at actual sporting events (ie. rugby and football) and other sites throughout Australia.
  • Students will have a range of cultural and academic experiences as you travel around Australia to Sydney, Cairns, and Gold Coast.

 

Eligible Students: This course is open to and designed for college/university students studying different academic disciplines within Sports Medicine and Athletics. This program is not affiliated with any college/university and students will not receive academic credit for participating. 

 

Travel Dates:   May 10 - 28, 2024

 

Cost:   $3,950** which includes:

  • Australian Domestic airfares: Sydney (SYD) to Cairns (CNS) and Cairns (CNS) to Gold Coast (OOL). NOTE: International airfares are NOT included in this price.*
  • 16 nights' accommodation (Students will be housed in shared, double or triple occupancy hotel/hostels throughout the program.)
  • 11 meals
  • local transportation to program events
  • entrance fees & guided tours per itinerary
  • entry to a professional Australian Football game
  • local tourism, included but not limited to, Sydney Harbor Cruise, Surfing lessons, Swimming/Snorkeling day on the Great Barrier Reef, Hartley's Crocodile Zoo, and much more!

*Cost excludes international airfares USA to/from Australia. These airfares are the responsibility of each participant. You can expect to pay approximated $2,000 for roundtrip airfares USA to/from Australia. Do NOT purchase airfares until established communication and further instruction provided by Sports Travel Academy Staff.

Program Goals:  As a result of participation in this Professional Development program, students will learn to appreciate and interact with Sports Medicine professionals in their field from a different culture outside of the United States. They will learn differences between Sports Medicine care/practices in the US and Australia. Students will be given the opportunity to grow through independent exercises that test their current way of thinking about Sports Medicine techniques/knowledge. They will be able to discuss the impact sports has on Australia in terms of the economy, education, and current advances in medicine. Our Academic Director, Dr. Jim Mensch, will test their current knowledge in Sports Medicine and make them think about things in a broader context, pushing their thinking and promoting their overall growth as students and individuals.

 

Program Leaders:

  • Dr. Jim Mensch (Academic Director): Dr. Mensch is the Athletic Training program director at the University of South Carolina. He has led students on Study Abroad programs to Australia, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and China. Dr. Mensch has worked with Sports Travel Academy for over 10 years.
  • Craig Douglass (Program Director): Craig is the Owner/CEO of Sports Travel Academy. He is Australian born and lived in Australia until relocating to the USA in 2002. He has been directing Study Abroad programs to countries all over  the world since 1996 and will be in Australia traveling with this program. ​
